Newburyport Family Dental is pleased to offer our extensive range of preventive and restorative treatments for dental and gum disease. Scaling and root planing is a restorative, non-surgical treatment option that involves cleaning off calculus from below, as well as above the gum line.
If you’re experiencing redness, swelling, bleeding, or pus in the gums, you may wish to know more about scaling and root planing treatment near you.
Scaling and root planing is usually done in two appointments. During the first session, we will clean the upper and lower quadrants of one side of the oral cavity and complete the other quadrant during the next appointment.
Our dentist in Newburyport, MA, will first administer local sedation for pain and sensitivity relief during the procedure. After applying a small dab of numbing gel, we will inject oral anesthesia at the site to numb the tissue. You will feel comfortable and relaxed during the procedure, but it’s normal to experience slight soreness after the procedure.
The second step after the anesthesia involves scaling or removal of tartar from below the gum line, between the gum line and the tooth root and from the base of the dental crown. The procedure is done either by a trained hygienist, general dentist, or periodontist. Our dentist at Newburyport Family Dental will use either manual or ultrasonic tools to loosen the tartar and clean it away.
During the planing procedure, we will clean deep below the gum line at the tooth roots where the gum disease is affecting the bone. Planing is done to smooth rough surfaces and eliminate subgingival bacteria.
We are pleased to offer safe and reliable scaling and root planing in Newburyport, MA. Give us a call to schedule your appointment today!
