Gum Disease Has Hidden Dangers

Protect Yourself with Gum Disease Treatment

When you have gum disease your gums take on an unmistakable red appearance and cause continual discomfort that can interfere with eating and social activities. The most alarming effects of gum disease are not as immediately obvious, however. Left unchecked, it can compromise your systemic health as well. The bacteria associated with gum disease have also been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, among other conditions. They can affect different organs in your body by traveling through your bloodstream. At Newburyport Family Dental we manage every phase of your treatment in-house, providing exceptional convenience and continuity of care. We have the training and tools to diagnose and effectively treat your gum disease, then provide ongoing therapy to make sure it doesn’t return. Scaling and root planing, followed by recurring periodontal maintenance, can leave you with healthier gums, better overall well-being, an improved smile, and even fresher breath!

Ongoing Treatment Is Critical

To be fully effective, gum disease treatment may include multiple steps. Scaling is a procedure during which we eliminate bacteria and signs of infection from underneath your gums using fine dental instruments. Scaling is usually followed by root planing, a treatment that goes deeper to remove built-up tartar and plaque from your tooth roots by smoothing them out. This smoother root surface will hinder further bacterial growth, since bacteria are more likely to accumulate on an uneven or porous surface, and will also enable your gums to reattach to the teeth. We will generally repeat these treatments during periodontal maintenance, which we recommend at regular intervals after your initial gum disease treatment is completed. These return visits to our Newburyport, MA office will give us the chance to do further deep cleaning—and you the opportunity to avoid the perils of gum disease and its more serious consequences.
